Familiar Territory
Familiar Territory is a series of photographs created to explore the intersection between physical place, memory, and our development. Physical places can hold powerful emotions, coming back to places we have not visited for years can bring powerful feelings and a sense of uncertainty or discomfort, even if these places were once familiar to us. I visited 10 different locations that were essential to my development as a person, these locations that were once commonplace to me, held conflicting memories. While many of my memories at these locations were fond, exploring them in the current day left me feeling uneasy and unwelcome. How could I be a stranger in a place that was once essential to my identity? Shooting on Black & White film, I strived to portray the confusing nature of these physical places.
As you look through these images I implore you to think of locations that were essential to your development. The memories you hold of them. If you were to visit them today, would you be welcome? Do they still exist?
All images were shot on 35mm & 120mm Black & White film. Developed, scanned, and edited by me. Familiar Territory was printed as a limited edition zine of 10 copies.
